- Positive material identification used to help verify alloy composition.
- Ra
- Arithmetic average roughness; one parameter that does not fully describe surface function or appearance.
- RFQ
- Request for quotation containing geometry, specifications, quantity, quality and delivery requirements.
- Runout
- Variation of a rotating surface relative to a datum axis.
S–Z
- Sampling inspection
- Inspection of a defined subset according to an agreed plan.
- Setup
- Machine, fixture, tool and datum arrangement used to manufacture features.
- Traceability
- Ability to link material, process, inspection and shipment records to the part or batch.
- Workholding
- Fixture, chuck, jaw or other method used to locate and secure the part.
- XRF
- X-ray fluorescence method for elemental composition screening, with material-identification limitations.

Terms such as “precision,” “full inspection,” “medical grade” or “aerospace quality” are too vague unless tied to measurable requirements and verified certifications.
