Material Selection
1045 and 4140 are often considered for stronger shafts; stainless steel for selected corrosive environments; aluminum for low load and low weight; brass or plastic for specialized friction or insulation. Final material depends on load, wear, environment and surface treatment.
Turning, Grinding and Process Sequence
General diameters may be turned directly. Tight bearing surfaces, hardened diameters or demanding roughness may require stock allowance, heat treatment and grinding. The drawing should identify which surfaces are functional instead of applying the same finish to the complete shaft.
Thread and Edge Control
Specify thread standard, class, effective length, relief and inspection gauge. Chamfers and edge breaks affect assembly; pin ends intended for press fit or location should not be deburred without a defined geometry.
Inspection
Inspection may include micrometers, indicators, centers/fixtures, roundness-capable methods, thread gauges and roughness measurement. Exact long-shaft and grinding capacity remains subject to equipment/network verification.
